PTC ThingWorx 10.0: What’s in It for Developers, Architects, and Customers

Introduction

ThingWorx 10.0 is PTC’s next-generation IIoT platform, delivering new levels of scalability, security, and intelligence for industrial organizations. Designed for industrial-scale deployment, it modernizes how developers, architects, and customers unlock value from connected operations.

What’s New in ThingWorx 10.0

  • Performance & Scalability: Enhanced caching, improved server scalability, and durable event/message handling.
  • Security: Updated frameworks (TLS, Tomcat 11, Java 21, Spring 6.2), stricter compliance for regulated industries.
  • Built-in Intelligence: Out-of-the-box analytics, real-time production monitoring, and deeper integration with AI tools.
  • Modern Widgets: New video player, media gallery, and debugging tools for richer, faster UIs.
  • Operational Enhancements: Expanded remote access, robust licensing/reporting, Postgres value stream partitioning, OAuth support for mail.

For Developers

  • IoT Streams & Durable Messaging: Real-time property values routing with external systems (Kafka, Azure Event Hubs). Extremely useful for event-driven architectures.
  • Writes property-value changes to Apache Kafka or Azure Event Hubs
  • Configurable batch and cache sizes for reliability
  • Event persistence even during service interruptions
  • Supports multiple queue configurations for different asset reliability requirements

  • Beta JavaScript Debugger: Seamless debugging in ThingWorx Composer—set breakpoints, step through code, refine custom logic effortlessly.
  • Set conditional breakpoints (blue circle = regular, orange = conditional)
  • Call stack analysis and step-through debugging
  • Variable inspection and expression evaluation
  • User-specific breakpoints (each developer maintains their own)
  • Currently in Beta – InfoTable variable inspection coming in v10.1 (December 2025)

  • Mashup & Widget Upgrades: New Video and Media Gallery widgets for modern dashboards; improved Grid and Collection widgets for advanced UIs.
  • Extensibility: View included JS libraries, avoid incompatibility in custom extensions.
  • Improved Runtime: Updated jQuery UI and faster entity caching quicken development and testing cycles.

Platform Modernization (Java 21 & Frameworks): ThingWorx 10.0 requires Java 21 (Java 11 deprecated). Breaking change: javax.* packages migrated to jakarta.* requiring extension recompilation. Updated to Spring Framework 6.2, Spring Security 6.4.2, Tomcat 11, and TLS 1.3 support (1.2 remains default). Enhanced Content Security Policy (CSP) Level 2 compliance for improved security posture.

For Architects

  • Enterprise-Grade Scalability: New architecture supports globally distributed deployments, massive device volume, and complex topologies.
  • Security & Compliance: Industry-best features to meet standards in defense, MedTech, and other sensitive industries.
  • Advanced Analytics & AI: Native analytics and AI integration enable architects to design systems that drive smart factory initiatives, predictive maintenance, and digital twins.
  • Partitioned Data Handling: Postgres value stream table partitioning for optimized big-data storage and time-based queries.
  • PostgreSQL 16 support with enhanced performance
  • Time-based query optimization for historical data analysis
  • Extended SQL functions for advanced analytics

Deployment Architecture Enhancements: High-availability deployments with active/passive Foundation servers, load balancers for device traffic distribution, support for Azure/AWS cloud deployments, distributed multi-site operations with ZooKeeper coordination (minimum 3 nodes), and networked enterprise storage for shared ThingWorx repositories across all nodes.

  • Reporting & Licensing Optimization: Fine-grained reports and license analytics support better system planning.

For Customers

  • Reduced Downtime: Customers like Flowserve saved millions by leveraging real-time monitoring and digital performance management.
  • Connected Worker: CWC modules offer contextual data and guidance for frontline operators—improving accuracy, safety, and OEE.
  • Flexibility & Future-Proofing: Modular platform, seamless cloud/edge integration, and support for upcoming technologies.
  • Best-in-Class Security: Trusted platform for regulated industries to ensure uptime and compliance.
